We have a few brochures about vegetarian diets that tell about their health and ethical benefits. IF you know of any additional brochures we can make available, please let us know. VEGETARIANISM AND THE MAJOR WORLD RELIGIONS | | | The Society of Ethical and Religious Vegetarians has prepared an excellent brochure that lists some of the major religions and how they teach vegetarianism. Religions covered include Eastern (Hinduism, Jainism, Taoism and Buddhism) and Western (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Bahai) traditions. As explained above, most prison authorities require that a person base their request for vegetarian diet on a religious practice, so this brochure can be very helpful. You can download it here:
| AND IF I DON'T BELIEVE? | | And if I Don't Believe is a guide for people in prison who are running in to problems getting vegetarian diets. Many states require that, to get approved for a vegetarian diet, an inmate be a practicing member of a recognized religion that teaches vegetarianism.
So, what if you are an inmate in a state prison that restricts vegetarian diets to members of certain religions and you do not believe in a supernatural god? What if you want to be a vegetarian for moral reasons, but don't believe that morality is based on a divinely revealed religion?
| TO CHERISH ALL LIFE: BUDDHIST TEACHINGS ON VEGETARIANISM | | | After thirteen years of Zen training in Japan, Roshi Philip Kapleau founded the Rochester Zen Center in 1966. Clear, direct and concise, Philip Kapleau's "To Cherish All Life" marshals the basic religious, humanitarian, and scientific reasons for becoming vegetarian. Expanding on the Buddhist principle of cherishing all life, Kapleau's discussion examines crucial Buddhist texts, thoughtfully considers the spiritual-ethical dimensions of the issue, and speaks cogently to those with a religious or humanitarian respect for all life. | |
| THE SCRIPTURE OF FORTY-NINE CHAPTERS: TAOIST TEACHINGS ON BEING A VEGETARIAN | | The Scripture of Forty-Nine Chapters is believed to have been written by "Ultra Supreme Emptiness Emperor - the Heavenly Lord." It has been translated by Silfong Chen. No date or school is given for what is considered a "syllabus of Tao-Cultivation," but it teaches vegetarianism, asceticism, and reincarnation. | |

| PETA's Material on the Religious Reasons to be a Vegetarian | PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS (PETA) is a nonprofit with a broader mandate than just helping people become vegetarians; they also advocate for animal-free testing of pharmaceuticals and a generally humane approach towards living with animals.
PETA makes available a number of pamphlets on the religious reasons to become a vegetarian. One we like a lot is CHRISTIANITY AND VEGETARIANISM. You can download it here:
