PRISON Regulations by Jurisdiction New York Prisons | New York Department of Correctional Services http://www.docs.state.ny.us/
The New York State Department of Corrections Religious Programs and Practices (Directive 4202) states the following: DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS. Inmates may refrain from eating those food items served to the general population which are contrary to their religious beliefs. A nutritionally adequate alternate diet shall be provided after validation and verification of the religious need for the alternate diet by the Ministerial Program Coordinator of the faith group or the Director of Ministerial and Family Services and the Assistant Commissioner for Health Services.
Our understanding of this regulation is that inmates should make their request to a chaplain, and the request must be based on the person's religious beliefs.
We suggest that you read the booklets "Vegetarianism and the Major World Religions" and "And if I don't Believe" available from another page on our website (http://www.prisonvegetarianproject.org/prisonersupportp) to learn about various religions that encourage vegetarian practice. You can use the booklet to support your request for vegetarian diet, and can also contact ASSISTECH for additional support. |
