The South Dakota Department of Corrections website lists the religions that they recognize as being the following: Asatru  Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Native American Spirituality , and Wicca  (http://www.state.sd.us/corrections/CulturalActivities.htm).

Their website does not, however, explain how you can request and obtain a vegetarian diet. We have contacted the South Dakota Department of Corrections and, as of January 2008, are awaiting their clarification.

January 2008 South Dakota Update:

While waiting for the South Dakota Department of Corrections to response to our question, our friend Shea is in a South Dakota prison and he wrote to tell us that he has arranged for a vegetarian diet without having to state any religious affiliation. He explains how he did this:

"A person has to put in a kite (an informal inter-prison memo) to their CULTURAL AFFAIRS COORDINATOR and request to be put on vegetarian diet. You do not have to give any religious affiliation. It only took two days for approval to come through. Please this along to others in South Dakota prisons."

Thanks for telling us, Shea. We'll try to confirm with the Department of Corrections as well.
