PRISON Regulations by Jurisdiction

California Prisons

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/

California Prisons will only grant permission for special diets if the request is based on a person's religious convictions.

In phone conversations with prison chaplains during the Fall 2008 we were told that as long as an inmate can truthfully state  that the request for a vegetarian diet is based on personal religious convictions, many California DOC chaplains will recommend approving the request, even if the inmate does not belong to an established religion that teaches vegetarianism (like Buddhism or Hinduism).

We suggest that you read the booklets VEGETARIANISM AND THE MAJOR WORLD RELIGIONS or AND IF I DON'T BELIEVE? (a guide for humanists), both of which are available from our website :

You can read these guides to learn about various religions that encourage vegetarian practice and can use the booklets to support your request for vegetarian diet.

Feel free to contact us for additional support.
The request for a vegetarian diet must be filed on a special form: CDCR 3030 (CDCR stands for California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation). The form must be submitted to and approved by a prison chaplain.

You can read about the regulations in Chapter 5 of the California Department of Corrections Operations Manual which you can download here. Pay particular attention to Article 51 which begins on page 444 of the downloaded file.
